Wayne Helfrich Obituary

Wayne Thomas "Swamper" Helfrich, a beloved father, grandfather, Navy veteran, and lifelong Red Wings fan, passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on April 6, 2025. Born on March 2, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan, to Wayne Turner Helfrich and Helen Marjorie Helfrich (née Coe), Wayne was known for his humble spirit, his dedication to his family, and his unwavering passion for life.

Wayne’s legacy lives on through his children, Scott Helfrich, Mark Helfrich, and Gordon (Ann) Helfrich, and his cherished grandchildren, Dillin Mitchell, Hunter Jacob, Matthew Austin, and Spencer Thomas. Wayne will be missed for his boundless generosity, quiet strength, and the way he lived every day with kindness and integrity.

As a Navy veteran, Wayne served his country with honor, though he never sought recognition for his service. His humility was a defining trait throughout his life, as he only ever took what he earned and gave more than he received.

Wayne was a devoted fan of the Detroit Red Wings, a passion that ran deep in his veins. He even named his sons after legendary players, instilling in them his love of hockey. His enthusiasm for the sport extended far beyond cheering from the stands, as he also coached and played the game he loved for many years.

Outside of hockey, Wayne was a man of many talents. A gifted acoustic guitar player, he would often serenade those around him, occasionally picking up a harmonica or mandolin. His love for Bluegrass and classic blues music filled the air of his home, creating an atmosphere of warmth and joy.

Wayne’s artistic side flourished through his passion for photography. He could often be found with a camera in hand, capturing the natural beauty of Kensington Park well into his 80s and 90s.

In addition to his creative pursuits, Wayne was a knowledgeable herpetologist, a passion he passed down to his sons. His fascination with reptiles and amphibians was one of the many ways he shared his interests with his family, fostering the curiosity in own sons.

Wayne was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley Louise Helfrich (née McMilleon), who was his partner in life for many years, as well as his brother, Frederick Kenneth Helfrich, and his sister, Lynn Helfrich.

His legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. Wayne was a man who believed in earning his place in the world, who found joy in the simple things, and who cherished his family above all. He will be missed dearly.

A private service will be held for family and close friends at a later date.
