Michael Earl Miles

Michael Earl Miles, aged 77, passed away on May 10, 2023, after a very courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, papa, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.   He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Kathryn Miles, his children Therese Miles, Michael (Jennifer) Miles, Rebecca (Brian) Foster, and his sweet grandchildren Isabella, Miles, Joseph, Michael, Zachary, Maxwell, and Mason.  Michael is also survived by his brothers Patrick, Gregory (Carol) Miles, and his sisters Maureen Cairo, and Kathy (Ralph) Stepaniak. Michael was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Josephine Miles. He will also be missed by his many nieces and nephews.  

Michael Miles was born on October 2, 1945, in Detroit.  In 1959 when Michael was just 13, he left home to attend the Society of Devine Word in Perrysburg, Ohio.  He continued to Marymount College in Miramar, Massachusetts.  In 1965 Michael left the seminary and shortly after that, he was set up on a blind date with Kathy Block.  It was love at first sight.  They were married on June 17, 1967.  Michael went on to become a decorated police officer for the Pontiac Police Department from 1967-1992.  He worked up through the ranks and retired as a Captain.   One of his greatest achievements as a police officer was when he was the Operational Commander for Pope John Paul’s II visit to the Pontiac Silverdome.  He prepared the security plan for Pope John Paul’s II visit along with the Secret Service for the highly anticipated historical mass.  His highly successful execution of that event led to Michael being invited to attend the F.B.I.  National Police Academy #153 in Quantico, Virginia.  Michael is a member of F.O.P #32.  After a short retirement, Michael continued his service as the Elk Rapids Police Chief from 1997-2010.  Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work, dedication, and passion for helping others.

But more than anything, Michael was a devoted husband, father, and papa. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, sharing stories, and playing games. He was always there to offer guidance, support, and encouragement, no matter what challenges they faced. His memory will forever be cherished by all who knew him.

The visitation for Michael Miles will be held on Monday, May 15, 2023, at Coats Funeral Home 8909 Dixie Highway Clarkston, MI 48348 from 4:00-8:00 with rosary service at 7:00.  Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church 5481 Dixie Highway, Waterford, MI 48349.  A luncheon will immediately follow the ceremony.
