Meta (Mitzi) Ann Grulke Schempf of Clarkston, Michigan entered her eternal rest on November 1, 2023 (All Saints Day) at 90 years of age.
Loving wife of the late Richard Schempf; beloved daughter of the late Albert and Martha Grulke; devoted mother of Michael (Karen) Schempf and Joanne (Jeffrey) Walsh; caring grandmother of Andrew (Linda) Schempf, Philip Schempf, Sarah (Robert) Bernhardt, Christina Schempf, Rachel (Kurt) Brandon, Sarah (Matthew) Renkiewicz, Christopher (Kimber) Walsh, Hannah Walsh. Meta is blessed with 14 great grandchildren.
Meta was born and raised in Alexandria, MN. She grew up on a farm and attended a one room schoolhouse during her elementary years. Meta graduated from Alexandria High School in 1950. She enrolled at Concordia College St. Paul, MN and pursued a teaching diploma. At 19, her first teaching assignment was in a one room school in Colby, WI, where she taught grades K-8.
She married Richard Schempf June 4, 1955. Over a lifetime, Mitzi was Richard’s confidant, teammate, prayer and ministry partner, travel companion and best friend. They traveled throughout the United States, spending many winters in Texas and Arizona.
Meta was a life-long learner and enjoyed many interests including reading biographies, gardening, food preservation, history, antiques, sewing, quilting, counted cross-stitch, travel, camping, and family genealogy. Meta and Richard were very dedicated grandparents traveling to attend many of their grandchildren’s activities.
Meta was a member of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod throughout her life and a long-time member of St. Trinity Lutheran Church in Clarkston, MI. She was actively involved in the life of the church teaching Sunday School, women’s bible studies, quilting, congregational meal preparation and cooking, Vacation Bible School, mid-week school and youth group activities. She greeted and welcomed many visitors to the church. Her life revolved around her husband, faith, family, her church and Christian service. She is admired for her deep trust in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.
