Melissa Ann Phillips, age 66, of North Port, Florida (formerly of Waterford, Michigan), passed away on May 7, 2025, surrounded by the family she loved so deeply.
Melissa was born on October 2, 1958, in Pontiac, Michigan, to the late Jim Cutler and Nancy (Veatch) Crossno. She grew up in Waterford, where she met the love of her life and best friend, Stan Phillips. From childhood neighbors to high school sweethearts, Melissa and Stan knew from an early age that their love was forever. They were married on April 26, 1975, in Waterford, Michigan, and over the next five decades, built a life filled with devotion, laughter, and unwavering companionship.
They truly were each other’s other half. Whether traveling, embarking on houseboat adventures, or enjoying a quiet afternoon at home, their time together was always meaningful. Melissa had a gift for arts and crafts, and creating beauty, especially in her garden, where lilacs, jasmine, and other fragrant flowers flourished under her care. It was her happy place, and a reflection of the peaceful spirit she shared with those around her.
The heart of Melissa’s world was her family. She and Stan were blessed with two children, Christina and Jason, and later six grandchildren and one great-grandchild—with another soon to arrive. Her love for them knew no limits. Holidays, milestones, or just-because weekends often turned into joyful celebrations at the Phillips home. Melissa loved hosting, and her warm, welcoming nature made their home a gathering place for friends and family alike.
Melissa and Stan celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary a month early. Wanting to mark the occasion with the people who meant the most to them, they rented a home in the mountains of North Carolina and invited their entire extended family and close friends to join them. It was a week full of laughter, memories, and deep connection. It was a celebration of not just a marriage, but of a lifetime of love, family, and joy. While there, Melissa and Stan went gemstone hunting, one of their favorite shared hobbies. Years earlier, she had discovered a 600-carat ruby—an extraordinary find she never tired of retelling, with a sparkle in her eye and pride in her voice.
Melissa dedicated 30 years of service to the United States Postal Service, most of them at the Davisburg Post Office in Michigan. In her later years, she and Stan relocated to Florida, where she completed her career and embraced retirement. She adored the warmth, the beach, and the Florida lifestyle. Even from afar, she remained the family’s anchor, always finding ways to bring everyone together. She even hosted her grandson Jake’s wedding celebration at their Florida home, bringing joy and togetherness across the miles.
Melissa is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Stan Phillips; her beloved children, Christina (Dominic) Phillips-Young and Jason (Joanna) Phillips; grandchildren Jacob (Breeanne) Phillips, Luke Young, Ezekiel Young, Dominick Phillips, Faith Phillips, and Jesse Phillips; great-granddaughter Lainey Phillips, and soon-to-arrive great-grandchild Emory Phillips. She is also survived by her siblings, Jamie (Kathy Halpin) Cutler and Andrea (Randy) Foster; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and step-parents, Jim (Jean) Cutler and Nancy (Tom) Crossno; siblings, Mary Cutler, Edward Cutler, John (Shelly) Cutler, Dawn Lanay Jeffrey, and Tommy Crossno; and her dearest friend, Robin Freeland.
A visitation will be held on May 9, 2025, at Coats Funeral Home – Clarkston, 8909 Dixie Highway, Clarkston, Michigan 48348, from 3:00pm to 8:00pm. Funeral services will take place on May 10, 2025 at 11:00am, with a prior visitation beginning at 10:00am. Officiating will be Pastor Jack Mannschreck.
