Mary Lee McLemore, of Pontiac, Michigan, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2025, at the age of 89. Born in Hillsboro, Alabama, on June 6, 1936 to the late John Fletcher and Icy Venie Clark (née Claborn), Mary lived a life full of love, faith, and unwavering devotion to her family and community.
Mary met the love of her life, Clifton Junior McLemore, and the two eloped to Iuka, Mississippi, beginning a lifelong journey together that would lead them to Michigan, where they raised a large and loving family. Mary was the head cook at Cranbrook for more than 20 years, where she was known not just for her skill in the kitchen, but for the warmth and care she brought to everything she did. Her homemade banana pudding and biscuits was the centerpiece of many family gatherings, and her cooking brought joy to all who knew her. Mary had a true green thumb and loved planting flowers. She had a special place in her heart for gospel and country music—favorites included the Gaither Brothers and Merle Haggard. She was also an avid fisherwoman who loved casting a line at Silver Lake Trout Pond, often reeling in trout or catfish which she’d cook for her family—though she never ate the catch herself. Giving back was a central part of Mary’s life. For over a decade, she dedicated her time and food to Columbia Avenue Baptist church in Pontiac, involving her children and grandchildren in her efforts to serve the community she loved so dearly. Above all, Mary cherished her family, especially spending time with all of her grandchildren.
She leaves behind her beloved children: Donna Elaine Hendrix, Brenda (John) Palmer, Kelvin Paul (Deanna) McLemore, and Robert Wayne (Doris) McLemore; beloved foster children: Paula Hamilton, Janet Hamilton, and Elaine Linton; as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings: John, Gertha, and Maurice. Mary is preceded in death by her devoted husband, Clifton Junior McLemore, her daughter Margaret Bridgewater, her parents, and her siblings: J.W., Bertie, and Martha.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at 11:30 AM at Coats Funeral Home – Waterford (3141 Sashabaw Road). Friends and family are welcome to gather at 10:30 AM prior to the service. Burial will follow immediately at Perry Mount Park Cemetery. Mary’s life was a testament to faith, family, and generosity. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who were blessed to know her.
