Marion Smith Obituary

Marion Agnes Smith, age 94, of Waterford, Michigan, passed away on August 30, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Detroit, Michigan, on February 25, 1931, Marion was the beloved daughter of William Emerson and Agnes Josephine Maas (née Kaier). She was raised in Lincoln Park, where she developed a lifelong love for learning and service to others. A 1949 graduate of Western High School, Marion was an active and enthusiastic student—participating in French club, swimming, and excelling in her academics. Her passion for education only grew stronger as she pursued higher learning throughout her life.

Marion earned her undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education from Eastern Michigan University in 1954. She went on to complete a master’s degree in counseling and Guidance in 1962, and later, a post-graduate Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Psychology from Michigan State University. She accomplished all of this while raising three children and balancing a full family life—a testament to her determination, brilliance, and unwavering commitment. Marion met and married the love of her life, the late William Smith, and together they built a warm and loving home filled with purpose and joy.

In 1971, Marion began her career as a school psychologist. A trailblazer in the field of early childhood development, she quickly recognized the lack of early screening and intervention programs for young children. With characteristic resolve, she took action—advocating at the state level in Lansing, securing vital grants, and implementing early intervention programs that would go on to change the lives of countless children and families in her community.

She created and led initiatives such as the Waterford Early Parenting Program (WEPP) and the "Bucket of Love" program for new parents, both of which had a lasting impact in the district. Her leadership extended beyond Waterford as she served as President of the Oakland Psychological Association and as Region 7 Director for the Michigan Association of School Psychologists. Marion served the Waterford School District with dedication for 33 years, retiring in 2005, having spent 30 of those years as a school psychologist. She was named Michigan School Psychologist of the Year in 2001, Hometown Hero for Oakland County in 2002, and Volunteer of the Year for her work with Youth Assistance programs. She was also a court-appointed advocate for the prevention of juvenile delinquency in Waterford Township.

A woman of deep faith, Marion was a devoted member of Orchard Lake Community Church—Presbyterian for over 70 years. Her spirit, generosity, and drive to serve others made her a beacon of light in the lives of all who knew her.

Marion is survived by her loving children: Eric (Mary) Smith, Mark (Sandi) Smith, and Julie (Mark) Youngblood; her cherished grandchildren: Nolan (Shannon), Cole( Brittany), Luke (Erica), Logan (Monica), Hayley (Matthias), Natalie (Adam), and Emmett (Erin); and her adored great-grandchildren: Mackenzie, Maxwell, Josphine, Brock, Miles H., Miles K., Eleanor, Lydia, James, Austin.  She is also survived/or preceded in death by her dear siblings: Larry (Joan) Maas, Lucille (Don) Ohosowski, and Edith (Ed) Baustert and her husband William, and parents.
