KOOP, LARRY G. of Pontiac, passed away unexpectedly on March 20, 2026 at 69 years of age.
Beloved husband of Karen (née Carlton) Koop for 8 years, a love at first sight with a “star” rating. Loving father of Lena, Annie, Brian (Nicole), and Charlie. Proud and cherished grandpa of Tara, Brian, Benny, Lola, Trinity. Survived by Karen’s children, Lynda (Bill) and Louie (Leah) and cherished as a grandfather by their children Brandon, Alice, Charleigh, and Mario. Preceded in death by the mother of his children, Angela Koop.
Larry was born in Pontiac to Albert and Antoinette Koop and was one of three children. He proudly served his country in the United States Army. A skilled machinist by trade, Larry dedicated many years to the automotive industry, where his strong work ethic and craftsmanship were well respected.
Outside of work, Larry was a man of many talents. He had a true artistic gift, especially in painting, and loved working with his hands—there was nothing he couldn’t build or fix. He enjoyed spending time in the great outdoors hiking with his beloved dogs, Lucy and Chula, and was well known for his playful claim of being the “UNO champion of the world,” though he’d admit his grandchildren were his toughest (and only) competition.
Larry will be remembered for his distinctive look—often mistaken for Sam Elliott—and his wonderfully dry, passive-aggressive sense of humor that brought laughter to those who knew and loved him. Above all, he will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and a faithful man of God whose deep love of Jesus Christ guided his life as he shared His word with everyone around him. He will be deeply missed forever.
A funeral service will be held Friday, March 27, 2026 6 PM at COATS FUNERAL HOME-WATERFORD. Family will receive friends Friday 4 PM until time of service. Interment at a later date at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly.
