Larry Armstrong Obituary

Larry R. Armstrong, 72, of Clarkston, Michigan, passed away unexpectedly on January 5, 2025. Born on March 11, 1952, in Pontiac, Michigan, to Marjorie (Schaar) Shelton and the late Robert Armstrong. Larry lived a life rooted in hard work, kindness, and a deep connection to the outdoors.

Larry spent much of his life in jobs that kept him outdoors, from driving trucks to operating heavy equipment, and all the while being a skilled carpenter. As a self-employed carpenter, he dedicated himself to building homes and was respected by all who worked with him. Known for his no-nonsense approach and strong leadership, Larry’s clear expectations and hands-on style made him a valued supervisor who inspired confidence in those he led.

One of the most significant roles in Larry’s life was caring for his uncle, Robert Schaar, for 16 years. More like brothers than uncle and nephew, Larry moved in with Robert so that he wouldn’t have to leave his home. Their shared love of hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors created a bond that lasted until Robert’s passing.

A gentle giant with a heart of gold, Larry was always ready to help anyone in need. His larger-than-life personality was impossible to ignore, and his straightforward yet caring nature made him a pillar of support to family and friends alike. Larry was also a passionate reader, always having a book in his hand. His favorite genre was fiction, specifically mystery, thrillers, and true crime. When he wasn’t reading, he could often be found on his boat, fishing and enjoying the quiet of nature.

Larry leaves behind his mother, Marjorie Shelton; children, Troy (Karen) Armstrong, Courie Armstrong Rose, Tracy (Steve) Chatfield, and Mark Armstrong; grandchildren, Robert Wardell, Jackson Rose, Randi Walker, Hannah Chatfield, Christian Chatfield, Melissa Chatfield, and Sarah Chatfield; sisters, Terry (John) Heald and Lori (Matthew) Goodman; aunt, Norma Matich; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Armstrong; his sister, Debrah Lewis; and his stepfather, Gordon Shelton.

A visitation will be held on Friday, January 10, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Coats Funeral Home, 3141 Sashabaw Rd., Waterford, MI 48329, with a funeral service beginning at 2:00 PM. Pastor Mark Pospisil will officiate.
