KORTGE, KATHLEEN “KATHY” (nѐe French) of Clarkston Michigan, passed away peacefully on December 17, 2024, at the age of 77, surrounded by her loving family.
Kathy was the beloved wife of Jerry for 55 years and the devoted mother of Sarah Taylor, Neil Kortge, and Emily (Matt) Cox. She was the cherished grandmother of Gabe, Mitchell and Jane Taylor and Norah, Andrew, and Evelyn Cox. She was also the loving sister of Mary (the late Dale) Hoffman, her twin Charles “Chuck” (Darlene) French, and the late Lloyd “Bud” (Katherine) French. Kathy treasured her nieces and nephews and her seventh dachshund, CeCe, who held a special place in her heart.
Kathy was a vibrant and creative woman, known for her humor and gregarious nature. She began her career in various sales roles within her family’s businesses, while also dedicating much of her early life to raising her children and supporting their education and extracurricular activities. Later in life, Kathy followed her passion for flowers and design, opening and operating Just Petals florist for over 15 years. Her unique and innovative floral designs earned her a loyal following and a steady stream of customers.
As an active member of Clarkston United Methodist Church, Kathy was often found in the second pew, where she formed lasting friendships and volunteered her design talents to many programs within the church. She and her husband Jerry were founding members of Pathfinders to Opportunity, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to providing inclusive and equitable opportunities for individuals with special needs.
Kathy’s generous and outgoing personality made her beloved by all. She never had acquaintances, only friends. She enjoyed spending time at the family cottage, boating, gardening, decorating, baking, and doing projects with her grandchildren. She will be forever loved and missed, with many remembering her fondly for the lipstick kisses she left on everyone’s cheeks.
A celebration of Kathy’s life will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Clarkston United Methodist Church, 6600 Waldon Rd, Clarkston, MI, followed by a joyful gathering in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Arc of Oakland County (https://www.thearcoakland.org).
