John J. Barnfather of Davisburg passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Highland Park, Michigan, to John O. and Lyle (nѐe Keippela) Barnfather, John lived a life defined by learning, service, family, and a deep appreciation for the written word. He was the beloved husband of Janet (nѐe Plumley) Barnfather for 63 wonderful years. Together they built a loving family and shared a lifetime of memories.

John was the cherished father of Brooke (the late Stephan) Liles and John (Brandy) Keippala. He was a proud grandfather to Zachary, Jessica, Aric, Halliwell, Mcallister, and Therrien, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride.

John was a proud Korean veteran of the United States Navy. Following his military service, he pursued his passion for education, earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree from Wayne State University. An accomplished scholar, John was honored with an invitation and membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Society — a distinction reserved for only for the most exceptional students. 

John devoted more than 30 years to shaping young minds as a teacher in the Pontiac School District, retiring in 1991. His career was one that came to him as much as he went to it — colleagues, institutions, and organizations consistently sought him out for his expertise. He began his teaching career through the Teacher Corps program at Wayne State University, student teaching in Pontiac before being hired directly without ever needing to seek a position.

His dedication to education extended beyond the classroom in remarkable ways. In the early 1980s, Oakland University sent him to New Zealand to train in a pioneering manipulative-based mathematics curriculum — a hands-on approach to teaching foundational math concepts to young children. He brought that curriculum back to Pontiac, implementing it in local classrooms and later teaching graduate students at Oakland University how to use the method effectively.

His commitment to learning also led him abroad, where he spent two years teaching elementary and junior high students at the Karachi American School in Daharki, Pakistan, through an exchange program with the Pontiac School District. He also served as a classroom consultant and adjunct professor at Oakland University throughout his career.

An accomplished scholar, John was honored with an invitation and membership in the Phi Beta Kappa Society, embracing its guiding principle that “Love of Learning is the Guide of Life.” Learning remained a lifelong pursuit. An avid reader who consumed countless books, newspapers, magazines, and other materials throughout his life, John also maintained a daily journal, leaving behind volumes of reflections, observations, and thoughts. His wit and creativity found a particular outlet in the Detroit Free Press Caption Contest, which he won numerous times — and occasionally entered under the pseudonym “Elema Curic,” a nod to his beloved elementary curriculum, when inspiration produced more than one worthy submission. Janet recalled, “I loved him for a lot of reasons, but I really loved him for how uniquely brilliant he was.”

Among his proudest accomplishments was, with the help of family and friends, the completion of the family’s chalet on Bois Blanc Island, a labor of love that took ten years to bring to fruition. He also enjoyed trips to Windsor Raceway, where he appreciated the strategy and skill of the sulky drivers.

John will be remembered for his intellect, curiosity, humor, dedication to education, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy lives on through the many students he inspired, the stories he recorded, and the family he cherished. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Funeral service will be held Friday, June 26, 2026 at 1 PM at Coats Funeral Home–Clarkston, 8909 Dixie Highway. Burial follows at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly with military honors.
