Janice (Bays) Richards

RICHARDS, JANICE of Waterford, passed away on November 20, 2025 at 83 years of age. She was the beloved wife of the late Stanley Kurzman for 18 years; cherished mother of Steve (Leah) Taylor, Jayson Taylor, Dani (Eric) Liblang, Randy (Mary) Kurzman, Jaime (Tammy) Kurzman, Amanda (Tony Francavilla) Kurzman, and honorary “3rd” son, Eric Stratfold; and loving grandmother of Justin, Kelsey, Jacob, Jessica (Haden), Joseph, Jordan, Amber, Ashley, Glorianne, Adam, Andrew, and Sarah. She is survived by her brother, Marvin Bays, and preceded in death by her sister, Evelyn Wendell; her twin sister, Judy Gretzener; and her parents, Ivan and Viola (née McQueen) Bays.

Janice was exceptionally proud of her educational accomplishments and her lifelong dedication to helping children. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Oakland University and her master’s degree in special education from Wayne State University. She began her career as a special education teacher in the Waterford School District and later retired as the Director of Special Education for the Farmington School District in 2007, marking over 50 years of service. Even in retirement, her expertise was sought after, and she continued her work on a contractual basis with the Michigan Department of Education.

Janice enjoyed a full and vibrant life. She loved to travel, bake, and sew—especially creating cherished Halloween costumes for each of her grandchildren. Her warmth, creativity, and kindness touched all who knew her, and she will be remembered for her generous spirit and deep devotion to her family. To know her was to love her.
