Janet Schomberg Obituary

Janet K (Schenck) Schomberg, age 80, of Pentwater, Michigan passed away in Holly, Michigan on August 12, 2024.  She was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 31, 1944, to Robert and Betty (Rushe) Schenck.

Janet grew up in West Acres in Walled Lake, Michigan.  She graduated from Walled Lake Central High School in 1962 and attended Oakland Community College-Highland Lakes where she earned an associate degree in liberal arts.  Janet worked for many years at Pontiac General Hospital in the billing department, retiring in 2002.

Janet married Herbert Schomberg on January 16, 1965, in Walled Lake, Michigan.  Together they had three sons--Tim, Bill, & Nate.  Janet and Herbert raised the boys in the Lake Oakland Heights neighborhood of Waterford, Michigan and eventually moved to their summer residence in Pentwater, Michigan.

Janet loved to socialize.  She spent many years volunteering in the Waterford Public Schools while her three sons were attending.  She was an avid fan of any sport the boys were playing, and the boys could always hear her cheer them on from the stands.  Bowling is a pastime that the whole Schomberg family excels at--and Janet was no exception.  Throughout her years in Waterford and in Pentwater she bowled on many leagues and participated in quite a few bowling tournaments throughout the state.  Janet played her clarinet in the Pentwater Civic Band and really enjoyed her fellow bandmates and their performances.

Janet, along with her husband and sons, was a big fan of Detroit Tigers Baseball and Detroit Lions football.  They spent a lot of time working events at the Pontiac Silverdome when her sons were teenagers.    Janet was a long-time member of the Lighthouse Lutheran Church in Pentwater, Michigan.  She sang in the choir, helped with the weekly bulletins, and assisted with anything that was asked of her.  Her church was a very important part of her everyday life.

Janet is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Herbert E Schomberg.  She is also survived by two of her sons--Timothy (Heather) Schomberg of Holly, Michigan and William (Susan) Schomberg of Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. Her sister Gayle Kubat also survives.  Gayle’s daughter, Sue King, was like a daughter to Janet.   Janet’s grandchildren include Devin (Tyler) Dearing-Manning of Holly, Michigan, Sam (Luke Smith) Strahl of Saginaw, Michigan, Miranda Schomberg of Muncie, Indiana, and Rylee Schomberg of Holly, Michigan.  Janet was blessed with four great-grandchildren, Murphy Dearing-Manning, Sloane Smith, Cole Dearing-Manning, & Bodie Smith.  “Grandma Jan” had a lot of other “kids” and “grandkids” that she loved as her own.  There are so many that will miss her including special friends in Pentwater and John, Jamie, and Jason Peters of Waterford and their families and Larry & Katie Hess and their children of Clarkston.  She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Janet was predeceased by her youngest son, Nathan Craig Schomberg in 2018.  She was also predeceased by her parents Robert & Betty Schenck, her brother and sister-in-law Paul & Carol Schenck, her brother-in-law John Kubat, her father and mother-in-law Leonard & Edna Schomberg, her sister-in-law and her husband Barbara & Hank Fietchner, her brother-in-law Richard Schomberg.

Anyone who knew Janet knew that she loved animals more than most.  We would be remiss if we didn’t mention her beloved yellow labs, Jack and Marley, who both crossed the rainbow bridge and left a hole in her heart.  In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Janet to your local humane society would be appreciated to assist all of the furry friends that Jan didn’t get to meet.

Visitation for Janet will be Friday August 16, 2024 from 4-8 pm at Coats Funeral Home, 3141 Sashabaw Rd., Waterford, Michigan. Her funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, at 11:00 am at Oak Grove Funeral Home of Ludington with visitation starting at 10:00 am. Janet will be laid to rest at Pentwater Township Cemetery.
