Grant Johnson Obituary

JOHNSON, GRANT L. of Clarkston, passed away December 25, 2024 at 101 years of age. Loving husband of the late Esther, and the mother of his children, the late Inez Johnson; dear father of Betty (David) Otterbein, Larry (Donna) Johnson, Diane Johnson, and Victor (Paula) Johnson; grandfather of Matthew (Erica), Robyn (Kurt), Rod, Jamie (Brian), Valerie (Thomas), Vanessa (Daran), Yvonne (Kyle), and Olivia; great grandfather of Kailynn, Kyle, Connor, Guinevere, Hannah, Carly, Addison, Joshua, Anna, Faith, Emma, Dawson, Raylan, Livia, Amelia, Cole, and Alex. One of eleven children, Grant was born and raised on a small family farm near Bryant, South Dakota by loving parents, Anton and Esther Johnson. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Grant joined the Navy and was a gunner on the USS Oakland and was one of the few surviving veterans of WWII. After the service he and Inez married and moved to Detroit, MI where they made their home and raised four children. He worked, and eventually part owner, for Kolbe Trailer Sales on 8 Mile Road. After retirement he married Esther and upon his retirement he looked forward to a quieter life. He and Esther moved to Alabama and built a home on Smith Lake in Arley. He was a jack of all trades and could build or fix anything. He was a skilled woodworker; loved farming; hunting and fishing. His charismatic personality meant no one was a stranger. He will be forever missed and loved as a patriot, husband, father, and grandfather. No services will be held at this time. Arrangements entrusted to COATS FUNERAL HOME-WATERFORD.
