Gerry D. (McKown) Ish

Geraldine “Gerry” D. Ish, 93, of Waterford, Michigan, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2025. She was born on June 15, 1932, in Auburn Heights, Michigan, to the late Cale and Ruth (Layden) McKown.

Gerry met the love of her life, Paul Ish, while they were in school. After graduating high school, they were married in October 1950. During Paul’s service in the U.S. Air Force, they traveled together before settling in Waterford, where they built a life centered on love, family, and togetherness. Gerry and Paul shared a deep bond — enjoying long bike rides, quiet walks around the neighborhood, and each other’s company for over 60 years.

Together, they raised two children, Terri and Mark. As a devoted stay-at-home mother, Gerry poured her heart into caring for her family. She was selfless, thoughtful, and always put the needs of others before her own. Gerry had a talent for sewing, creating stylish clothes not only for her family but even for Terri’s dolls — and she once proudly crafted a wedding dress. Her creativity also extended to the kitchen, where she delighted in baking and decorating cakes for birthdays and preparing delicious meals for her family.

Once her children were grown, Gerry began working as a secretary for Sears, helping to contribute to Mark’s college education. True to her nurturing spirit, she also volunteered for over 20 years in the recovery unit at Pontiac General Hospital, offering care and comfort to countless patients.

Gerry will be remembered for her warm heart, generous spirit, and gentle strength. She was known to be incredibly kind — to both people and animals — with a loving and loyal nature. Those who knew her well also cherished her fiery wit and playful sass.

She is survived by her beloved children, Terri and Mark Ish; granddaughter, Katie (Eric) Weingarden; great-granddaughters, Ella and Maya; sister, Nancy (Jim) Smith; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Paul Ish, and her brother, Bill McKown.

Family and friends are invited to a Visitation on Thursday, July 10, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Coats Funeral Home, 3141 Sashabaw Rd., Waterford, MI 48329.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Michigan Animal Rescue League, an organization close to Gerry’s heart.
