Gerald Clement Hallberg Jr., beloved father, grandfather, brother, and educator, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on October 8, 1942, in Midland, Michigan, he was the son of the late Gerald Clement Sr. and Barbara Hallberg (née Johnson).
Gerald was a proud graduate of Midland High School and went on to pursue higher education at Central Michigan University, where he earned both his undergraduate and master's degrees in Education. A passionate and dedicated teacher, Gerald devoted over 25 years of his career to the Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy (SASA), inspiring countless students with his creativity and love for 3D art, particularly sculpture and pottery. He also spent time teaching art at other schools in the Saginaw District and also at St. Clair Shores, sharing his talents and enthusiasm wherever he went.
A true craftsman at heart, Gerald was a gifted tinkerer and handyman—there was little he couldn't fix. He found joy in restoring antique cars while listening to his favorite 1950s tunes, especially proud of his replica Mercedes-Benz roadster. His workshop at home was his haven, where he could always be found working on a new project. Perhaps nothing brought him more delight than trains. Gerald’s passion for model railroading was unmatched, and his collection of elaborate train sets was nothing short of extraordinary.
Above all, Gerald was a devoted educator, a committed father, and a proud grandfather. He is survived by his sons Eric Hallberg (Nicole Crane) and Jason Hallberg; grandchildren Jacob, Gavin, Charlee, Sage, Corbin, and Quinn; and his siblings Edwin Hallberg (Holly) and Anne Nicholson. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Beverley, his parents, and his brother Stephen Hallberg.
A funeral service honoring Gerald’s life will be held on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Coats Funeral Home, Clarkston (8909 Dixie Hwy). Family and friends are welcome to gather beginning at 11:00 AM until the time of service. Interment at Midland Memorial Gardens Cemetery (Meridian Rd.).
Gerald's legacy of creativity, care, and curiosity will live on in all who knew and loved him.
