Dr. Gerald Norman Gauthier, O.D., of Waterford, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2025, at 81 years of age.
Born in Flint, Michigan, Gerald was the beloved son of the late Joseph Hector and Lillian Evelyn Gauthier (née Holmes). He grew up in Muskegon, where he attended St. Mary’s Elementary and Middle School, and completed his High School degree at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Grand Rapids.
With a deep dedication to education and a passion for helping others, Gerald earned his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University, followed by a master’s degree in optometry. He met the love of his life Judy Pennington, during his undergrad at State and the two have been inseparable since. He later went on to complete his doctorate at the Illinois College of Optometry, where he was a member of the National Fraternity of Optometry: Omega Delta - Alpha Chapter, proudly becoming Dr. Gauthier—known affectionately by many simply as "Doc."
Outside of his professional accomplishments, Gerald deeply cherished time spent at the family cabin in Tawas, Michigan. Whether he was hunting, fishing, or simply enjoying the peacefulness of the outdoors, "up north" was where he felt most at home. He was an accomplished sportsman, once winning the State Championship in Skeet Shooting, and he was a longtime member of the Multi-Lakes Conservation Association Gun Club. Gerald was also the undisputed breakfast champion at the cabin—his cooking skills were rivaled only by the love he poured into feeding his family.
He is survived by his loving children: Kyle (Aimy) Gauthier and Kati (David) Holland; his treasured grandchildren, Aiden Gauthier and Ava Holland; his brother, Tom (Janet) Gauthier; and his beloved dog, Oreo. He is preceded in death by his devoted wife of 57 years, Judith Gauthier; his parents, Joseph and Lillian; and his sister, Lyn (Dan) Klairter.
The family will receive friends on Friday, October 24, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Coats Funeral Home – Waterford (3141 Sashabaw Road). A Memorial Service will begin at 12:30 PM, immediately following the visitation.
In honor of Doc's life and legacy, memorial donations may be made to Leader Dogs for the Blind, an organization close to his heart.
