BENNING, GARY J. of Waterford, passed away October 3, 2024 at 77 years of age. Loving husband of Sheryle for 49 years; devoted father of Frank Benning and Nikki (Bill Cook) Benning; grandpa of Destini (Lauren), Ireland, Makenzie, Dylan, and Emily; brother of Pat (Natalie Zett) Benincasa. Gary graduated from Pontiac Central High School in 1965 and later earned a bachelor of science degree from Ferris State College where he was initiated as a brother of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity. In 1961, Gary’s family built Airway Lanes in Waterford and it was there that Gary would meet the love of his life, Sheryle (Quinn) in 1972. Gary and Sheryle eventually owned Airway Lanes and ran it together until its sale in 2012. Always proud of his Italian heritage and fascinated by family history and genealogy, he became the unofficial family historian amassing an impressive collection of artifacts and information spanning several generations.
Gary enjoyed traveling with Sheryle and together they had many adventures including a trip to Italy to visit Mangone, Calabria where his family originated. After he retired he became an avid golfer and he and Sheryle enjoyed cheering for the Detroit Tigers, attending as many games as they could. He loved telling stories and making people laugh, labeling everything in the house, keeping up with politics, sharing his wisdom, playing and coaching baseball/softball, and collecting golf balls on the course. More than anything, he wanted to keep his “trophy wife” happy and take care of his family.
Every weekend this summer was spent at One Night Stan’s so he could escape the realities of his medical issues and just watch his wife, Sheryle, laugh. Gary was known for being a kind and generous person and was so very proud of each and every one of his children and grandchildren! Always ready with a joke or a bad pun, he will be remembered as a loving husband, an awesome dad and gramp, a great boss, uncle, friend, brother, and role model.
A celebration will be held Saturday, October 19, One Night Stan’s Comedy Club. 4761 Highland Rd, Waterford from 11:00am - 4:00pm; Memorial service starts at 12:00pm followed by a chance to offer personal memories and reflections.
