Ellen Lee Rice Dempsey, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully in Mount Pleasant, Michigan on May 9, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and kindness that touched all who knew her.
She was born on August 20, 1935 in Springfield, Missouri, to Max and Mildred (nee Baker) Rice. She was an accomplished violist having played in the Missouri All State Orchestra and then in the Springfield, Missouri Symphony Orchestra. Later, she played in the Lansing Symphony Orchestra. Ellen was also an accomplished ballerina who had her own dance studio in Springfield. Through the years, Ellen also shared her gift of song. She sang alto in numerous church choirs as well as in the Oakland Choral Society. Additionally, Ellen taught various subjects on and off throughout her life, including teaching English as Second Language classes for a number of years.
A warm and welcoming presence, Ellen found joy in the simple pleasures of life—tending to her flowers, surrounding herself with those she loved, and having fun. Her love for music, nature, and ballet reflected her nurturing, delightful spirit and deep appreciation for beauty in all forms.
Ellen was the devoted wife of the late A. Michael Dempsey for 67 beautiful years. Together, they built a life rooted in family, faith, and mutual support with music and loads of fun sprinkled in. She was the proud and loving mother of Brian (Sara), Chris (friend Alicia Solis), and Tom (Toshie), and the cherished grandmother of Colleen (fiance Andrew Tehranisa) and Jake (Dani). Her sister, Mary Anne, preceded her in death.
Ellen was admired for her positive outlook and unwavering support for her family. She raised three strong sons with grace and wisdom, instilling in them her values of resilience and integrity. Her deep love for her family was evident in everything she did.
She is also lovingly remembered by her brother-in-laws, Pat (Margaret) Dempsey and George Simpson, and by a wide circle of friends whose lives she brightened with her warmth and kindness.
Ellen's presence was a blessing, and her absence leaves a profound void. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
