Burchell Wayne Sowders

Burchell Wayne “Wayne” Sowders, age 87, of South Lyon, Michigan, formerly of Artemus, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2026.

Wayne was born January 22, 1939, in Artemus, Kentucky. He was raised in a loving Baptist family and carried the values of faith, kindness, hard work, and devotion to family throughout his life. Wayne was the oldest son of Charles Graham Sowders and Doris Lorraine Sowders of Tawas City, Michigan. His brother Hurles Lee Sowders the second son of Lorraine and Charlie preceded him in death. Charles Clayton Sowders the youngest brother of the three will miss Wayne along with Carol Lynn Sowders Trekas who was Waynes only sister and the youngest of the four siblings. Wayne had many cousins and aunts and uncles and other relatives all over the United States who will miss him.

Wayne proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. During his military service, he was stationed in Iceland and other locations while serving as an air traffic controller. He often reflected on his years of service with pride and appreciation for the experiences and friendships he gained during that time.

After his military service, Wayne built a successful career as a carpet salesman. He was known for his strong work ethic, friendly nature, and ability to connect with people. He took pride in helping others and made many lasting friendships throughout his career.

Wayne married the love of his life, Marie Sowders. Together they built a life centered on family, love, and dedication to one another. They shared many happy years together and raised three sons whom Wayne loved dearly. Wayne is survived by his beloved wife, Marie Sowders; his sons, the eldest Steven Ray Sowders of South Lyon, Michigan; his second son Lee Allen Sowders with his significant other the late Becky of Burton, Michigan; and his youngest son Chris Wayne Sowders and his wife Tina Agnello Sowders of Garden City, Michigan. He was the proud grandfather of Nickolas Robert Sowders of Garden City, Michigan, who brought him great joy.

He is also survived by his sister, Carol Lynn Trekas and his brother-in-law Jonas James Trekas of Portland, Oregon, and his brother, Charles Clayton Sowders of South Lyon, Michigan. Wayne was a cherished uncle and great-uncle to many nieces, nephews, and their families, including Carol's children: Tyrel Graham Cooper niece-in-law Jessica Cooper and great nephew Griffin Graham Cooper of Henderson, Nevada; nephew Adam Harold Cooper of Albany, Oregon; nephew Wesley Owen Cooper and niece-in-law Crissy Cooper, great niece Adeline Marie Cooper and great niece Amelia Paige Cooper of Forest Grove, Oregon; and niece Emily Lorraine Cooper of Gladstone, Oregon. He is also survived by his niece, Kimberly Ann Revnew of Kansas City, Missouri, daughter of Charles Clayton Sowders, nephew-in-law James Revnew, of Missouri, great nephew Patrick Revnew and great nephew Joshua Revnew of Denver, Colorado and great niece Katie Revnew of Missouri. 

Family meant everything to Wayne. He loved spending time with his nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, and he took great joy in watching their families grow. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend whose love and generosity touched many lives.

One of Wayne's greatest passions was collecting beautiful glass pieces. Over the years, he assembled an impressive collection that reflected both his appreciation for craftsmanship and his eye for beauty. He enjoyed sharing his collection with family and friends and took great pride in each treasured piece.

Those who knew Wayne would remember his gentle spirit, warm heart, and unwavering love for his family. He was always willing to listen, offer support, and share stories and laughter. His presence brought comfort and strength to those around him, and his memory will continue to be a source of inspiration and love.

Wayne was cremated through Southern Michigan Services in Livonia, Michigan, under the care of National Cremation Society in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Though our hearts are heavy with his passing, we take comfort in the many wonderful memories he leaves behind. Wayne loved his family deeply, and that love will remain with us always. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
