Bonnie Joan McVety

Bonnie Joan (Johnson) McVety of Reed City, Michigan, peacefully passed away on August 20th, 2023 at the age of 82 years with her children at her side. She was very happily married to Richard McVety, who passed away in January of this year.

Bonnie was born March 24th, 1941 in Waterford, MI. She was the middle child of Ivan and Wilema Johnson of Drayton Plains, MI, Survived by her sister, Kay (James) McVety and preceded in death by her brother William (Cindy) Johnson.

Bonnie was very blessed with a large and loving family. She met her husband Richard, years prior at a family outing, never suspecting they would fall in love some years later.  They went on a double date with her sister Kay and his brother Jim (who also married) and after 6 months courting they were married on October 6th, 1962.  Their romance lasted 60+ years and were blessed with 5 “pretty much great” children.  They started their life in Lake Orion area and built their family home in Clarkston. They loved vacationing outdoors with the family at their property in Evart on the Muskegon River affectionately named “Lazy 7 M’s”. Later, they retired to their beautiful 80 acres of land in Reed City to watch the deer & wildlife roam their property and enjoy the antics of visiting children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bonnie also loved to go camping, fishing, playing cards/games and visiting many of the casinos throughout northern Michigan among other places with her husband. 

Bonnie was a Mother/Mom/Ma to Jerry (Kelly) McVety, Gary (Liz) McVety, Cheryl Brophy, Dawn (Brian) Podgorski and Dennis (Janay) McVety.  They all joke about who was her favorite child.  Truth be told, she loved them all in their own very “special” way!!  During their school years, she was primarily a homemaker, a Cub Scout Den Mother for Pack 349 and helper to the Camp Fire Girls. She made sure to teach her children the rules of life and to eat their vegetables, but was often caught with her favorite treats tucked away, throughout her life.

Bonnie was Grandma/Mahama to Jonathan (Kathy), Marissa, Andrew (Andrea), Chris (Sam), Jessica (Marc) and Dan (Nikki), Katey (Tyler), Josh (Shelby), Jacob, Casimer, Madison, and Brianna (Evan), Meranda (Nick).  

She was a Great Grandma/Mahama/Hama to Caden, Malachai, Colin, Lily, Chase, Parker, Dawson, Addilynn, Colton and Daxton, with the prospect of many more to come!

Bonnie will join her husband, Richard, to be laid to rest together forever at Great Lakes National Cemetery 4200 Belford Rd, Holly, Mi 48442 on September 15th, 2023. The ceremony will celebrate both of their lives and include Military Honors for Richard, which will begin at 1230pm sharp.
