Obituary

Steven James Schell Sr., age 72, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, music, service, and generosity that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He was born on July 31, 1953, in Pontiac, Michigan, to James Frederick Schell and Wanda May Schell (née McCain), who preceded him in death. Steve graduated from Waterford Mott High School in 1971 and carried his passion for life well beyond those years. A tremendously gifted musician, music was woven into the very fabric of who he was. He proudly played bass guitar for the band Shotgun Willies, where his talent, rhythm, and soul came alive on stage. He loved country music and classic rock, not only listening to it endlessly but living it. Steve even wrote a song of his own — a reflection of his heart, creativity, and the stories he carried within him. It was through music that Steve met the love of his life, Michele Denise Stanley, while performing with his band at the HiKicker Saloon in Pontiac. Married for 18 wonderful years, Michele was not only his wife but his best friend, his partner in life, and his greatest joy. Steve was truly a man who could do it all. He earned a black belt in multiple martial arts disciplines, owned Overrange Archery in Waterford, and was famously known as the man who could fix absolutely anything. If something was broken, Steve would figure it out. He loved the outdoors and found peace in hunting, especially deer hunting, where he felt most at home. For over 30 years, Steve dedicated himself to Oakland County, serving as a Supervisor of Grounds Maintenance. He took great pride in his work and even greater pride in the people he worked alongside. His commitment to others extended into his role as Union President for the Oakland County Employees, a position he held for many years.  Above all else, Steve loved his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Michele Schell; his children Heather, Steven Jr., and Tyler; his stepson Jimmie; and his cherished fur baby, Leroy the bulldog, who never left his side. Steve was a proud and loving grandfather to many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Wanda (Steve) Makushik, David Schell, and Shari (Allen) Zwierzchowski, along with many nieces and nephews who adored their Uncle Steve. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Greg Schell. A memorial visitation will be held Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 1:00 p.m., at COATS FUNERAL HOME – CLARKSTON, located at 8909 Dixie Highway. Please note that Coats Funeral Home has multiple locations, and guests are encouraged to ensure they arrive at the Clarkston location. In honor of Steve's big heart and love for dogs, memorial donations may be made to the Oakland County Animal Shelter.
