SZABO, STEVE DONALD, age 88, passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2020. He was born on December 10, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois to parents Eugene and Margaret (nee Poczos) Szabo. He grew up in Chicago and in 1957, after graduating from the University of Illinois, moved to Michigan where he accepted a teaching and coaching position at Pontiac Central High School. He was the head of the Physical Education Department and coached wrestling and football. He also played semi-pro football as middle linebacker, #55, with the Pontiac Arrows and Firebirds until he was 40 years old. He taught Driver's Training in the summer for many years and coached and played fastpitch and slowpitch softball. He established a weight training program for the Pontiac Police Department, helped establish wrestling in the junior high schools and ran exercise programs for students. He retired from teaching in 1986, but continued to coach wrestling until 1997, a total of 40 years! He was honored to be elected to the Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame. After retiring, he did home remodel jobs and had more time to fish. Coach Szabo, as he will forever be known, was a friend, mentor, and like a second father to his students and players. He was always easy going, had a great sense of humor and had a smile for everyone. He loved spending time with family and friends, traveling, boating, and watching football. He will be forever missed by everyone. Steve is survived by children: Laura (Mike) Fenlon and Steven (Bethany) Szabo; grandchildren: Jennifer Fenlon, Jessica Fenlon, Andie Szabo, Katie (Tony) Szabo Williams, and Abbie Szabo; great granddaughter, Stevie Jean Williams. He was preceded in death by wife of 61 years, Lois; siblings: Eugene, Joe, and Irene; grandson, Jonathan. Due to the COVID pandemic, a private graveside service will be held at All Saints Cemetery in Waterford. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later time. Those desiring may make a memorial contribution to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in honor of Steve.
