Loving sister of John (the late Marilyn) Friedly, Richard (Pamela) Friedly and David (Suzanne) Friedly; aunt of Webb (Cara) Friedly and Megan (Josh) Cassada; great aunt of Sydney, Sailor, Quinn and Graham. div " Arial;" //div p " Arial;"Shirley was born June 13, 1935 in Tully Township near Convoy, Ohio, the first born of John N. Friedly and Helen L. Friedly. She graduated from Pontiac Senior High School in June of 1952 before attending Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) in Ypsilanti, MI where she graduated with honors with her B.A. in Education in 1956. While there, she was a member of the Pi Kappa Sigma scholastic sorority and sang in the Panhellenicchoir. She would later receive her Masters of Education from the University of Michigan Flint in 1960. div " Arial;" //div div " Arial;"Upon graduation fromcollege at the age of 21, Shirley began work as a 4th grade teacher at Wing Lake School in the Bloomfield Hills School District with a salary of $4,000 and a classroom of 38 students. After just a short time at Wing Lake, she briefly taught at the Booth School before moving on to Eastover Elementary School where she would teach the bulk of her 48 years as a teacher. At thetime of her retirement at the age of 68, Shirley was the longest employed teacher in the Bloomfield Hills School Districtrsquo;s history, the'legend of Eastover.div div " Arial;" //div div " Arial;"Shirley was a master of her craft. A'teacherrsquo;s teacher' as her colleagues would describe her, always putting her students first. Teaching for five decades, she was paid the ultimate complimentmdash;former students of hers grew up to have children of their own and requested her as a teacher. She was recognized as a Master Teacher by her district in 1991./div div " Arial;" //div div " Arial;"In the summers when she was younger, Shirley traveled extensively around Europe and Russia as a chaperone to various groups of teens. She was always a wealth of information about the variousplaces she visited, her favorite being Florence, Italy./div div " Arial;" //div div " Arial;"In her free time and especially in the summers before she retired, she loved playing bridge several days a week with her many great friends.She was part ofseveral, sometimes overlapping bridge groups hosted at homes and restaurants around the area. She was an avid reader, particularly of mysteries, was an amazing cook, and loved to swim at the YMCA in Milford, Michigan. In themornings during the summer and after sheretired, she could often be found drinking coffee while reading the paper and enjoying her beautiful flower gardens from her back deck./div div " Arial;" //div div " Arial;"Though she did not have children of her own, Shirley played an essential role in the lives of her nephew, Webb, and her niece, Megan, from Charlevoix, Michigan. Webb and Megan now have children of their own who have been ly impacted through the love and experiences'Aunt TeeTee' provides, be it a stay in a lakeside summer cabin in the summer or a trip to see'A Christmas Carol' at Meadowbrook Theater this past winter. She was always the kind of person to put forth that extra effort to think of every special detail because she knew she was creating lifelong memories and bringing people together./div div " Arial;" //div div " Arial;"Shirley was extremely generous, loving, and patient. She modeled for her family and friends how to age gracefully. She leaves a legacy of a life well and fully lived.div
