Obituary

Patricia Eileen (Sleno) Whalen was born February 7, 1946, in Easton, Michigan, to Albert and Helen (Moss) Sleno.  Pat attended a one room school house in Easton until 3rd grade, when they placed a wall down the middle, making it into a two room school.  Pat graduated from Owosso St. Paul High School and Sienna Heights University.  She taught math at Flint St. Michael's High School, Mount Morris Junior High, and for over 20 years for Waterford Adult Education.  On August 4, 1973, she married Larry Whalen, at St. Michael's Catholic Church.  Together, they were devoted members of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church for 49 years.

Pat was a home maker for several years when their children, Janet and David, were young.  Also, for 13 years, she was the co-owner and co-director of Timber Surf Camping Resort in Fountain, MI.  In the last 25 years, she enjoyed spending the winter at Holiday R.V. Resort in Leesburg, Fl.  She enjoyed the grandkids and all their activities.  She also enjoyed attending Mass and Rosary, music and shows, sports, and playing cards and shuffleboard; and for the last eight years enjoyed the retirement home that she and Larry purchased on Schoolhouse Lake.  Everyone that knew Pat always commented on how sweet and nice she was to everyone. For the last nine years, Pat fought a heroic struggle against illness.  From 57 days in the hospital in 2015, a stroke in 2019, and 54 hospital days this past winter, Pat's spirit never failed.  She was always up to the challenge of getting her body and mind, back to health.  She trusted in God and never gave up.

Pat is survived by her husband Larry, her children, Janet (Andy) Alexander of Freeland, MI, and Dr. David (Dr. Vicki) Whalen of East Grand Rapids; four grandchildren, Maddy and Jacob Alexander, Monica and Adam Whalen; her sister, Margaret (the late Neal) Saffer in Seatle, WA, as well as many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her sisters Marie and Irene and her brother James (Ann) Sleno. The family wishes to thank St. Joseph Hospital, Lourdes Rehab Facilities, Standish Home for the Elderly, and Mid-Michigan Hospice for the excellent care they gave Pat.
