Turner, Joyce Dorothy, age 95, passed away on Wednesday, December 15.  She was born in Portsmouth, England on October 2, 1926, daughter of the late William and Edna (nee Townsend) Batterbury; loving wife of the late James A. Turner;  beloved mother of Susan (Rick) Newill, Alison (Mark) Smith, James S. (Julie) Turner, and Jeffrey (Debbie) Turner.  Special  mother-in-law of the late Martha Turner.  Joyce was the treasured Nana of 10 grandchildren:  Sara (Jeff) Snow, Ryan Newill, Rachel Newill, Jeremy (Jamie) Smith, Jennifer Smith, Rebecca (fiancé Miguel Camacho) Turner, Scott Turner, Brian Turner, Katalyn Turner and Natalie Turner.  Great-Nana of Jude Smith, Martha Camacho, Hailey Sanney and Roczen Turner.  Joyce is also survived by her beloved youngest sister, Brenda (Roger) Parnell.

Joyce was the middle child of nine children and only her youngest sister, Brenda, survive her.  Pre-deceased by her siblings:  William (Bib) Batterbury, Arthur Batterbury, Edna (Nen) Brenay, Louis Batterbury (deceased at age 7), Elsie Rhodes, Dennis Batterbury and Jeannette Tremaine.

Her hometown of Portsmouth, England (a naval base) was heavily bombed during World War II.  Her two eldest brothers served in the Royal Navy.  Joyce and several of her younger siblings were evacuated, but were returned home to their parents not long after.   The youngest sister, at that time, Jeannette was evacuated at the age of 11 to an aunt and uncle living in Canada.  Because of the war and bombings, Joyce's education was cut short at age 14.  (In England, the normal age of secondary graduation is age 16.)  It was required of all British subjects to aid in the war effort and she served in the Red Cross, and also began working as a seamstress in a lingerie factory in 1940.

In 1950, Joyce met her future husband, James, who was a trombonist in a big band, at a dance hall he was performing at in Portsmouth.  In May 1952 they sailed on the MV Georgic from Southampton, England to New York, NY, and immigrated to Pontiac, Michigan.  Joyce and James were married on December 27, 1952 and became naturalized U.S. citizens in 1958.

Joyce retired from the Drayton Plains Kmart in 1995, after 20 years of employment.  She enjoyed bowling with the Kmart bowling league, traveling, knitting, playing Scrabble and was a talented seamstress sewing many outfits for all 4 of her children when they were young.

The family will greatly miss their very own "Queen of England" and wish to thank her caregivers and friends for all their love and support.
