As a child and full ride scholarship recipient, he spent his summers at the Interlochen Fine Arts Music Camp. Recognized as a gifted musician, Jerry later obtained a Masters degree in both piano and voice from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan andwasa Stephen David Epstein award winner for three consecutive years in addition to receiving a full endowment throughout his academic career. After college,Jerry taught in Pontiac and was head of the vocal music program at Pontiac High for five years. Although deemed tremendously successful as a music educator, he followed his passion for concert and club performance.
