SMILEY, GAIL FRANCES, age 88 of Waterford, passed away on February 8, 2023 after a long illness. Gail was born on January 9, 1935, in Denver, Colorado to the late Frederick and Sarah (Carrel) Hooper. Gail worked as a Candy Striper at Pontiac General Hospital and later retired from First Federal Savings Bank after several years of dedicated service. She enjoyed many crafts including knitting, crocheting, and woodworking. Gail loved to play the piano and was a gifted singer – she even received a scholarship to Interlochen for voice in her senior year of high school and also sang with the Jackson Chorale. A past member of the Blue Water RV Club with her late husband Donald, Gail loved traveling and resided in seven different states over her lifetime and spent her winters in Florida. She also enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, camping, and had a love for all animals. More than anything, she loved and cherished her family. Gail is survived by her children: Michael (Paula) Ward, Ann (Rick) Collins, Paul Ward, Kristin Smiley, and Steve (Robin) Smiley; grandchildren: Michelle (Kirk) Sherman, Renee (Ryan) Powell, Danielle (Tino) Ybarra, Bryan (Liz) Ward, John (Jen) Ward, Deidre Ward, Tommie (Jared) Sundquist, Courtney Perna, Rick (Paula) Smiley, Steve (Melody) Smiley, Chris Smiley, and Dianna (Joe) Dijanni; 19 great grandchildren; 9 great-great grandchildren; siblings: David Hooper and Fritz Hooper. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Donald Smiley, and previous husbands Frank Perna and John Ward; sons: Tom Perna and Terry Perna; grandson, William Farabaugh; and sister, Kathy Hooper. A funeral service will take place at 11am on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at COATS FUNERAL HOME – WATERFORD. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 from 3-8pm. Interment at Ottawa Park Cemetery. Those desiring may make a memorial contribution to Alzheimer's Association in honor of Gail.
