Obituary

ZITTEL, FREDERICK, Jr., age 93 of Waterford, passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2023. He was born on June 15, 1929 in Saginaw to the late Frederick and Emma Zittel, Sr. Fred grew up in Pontiac and later attended the University of Toledo on a football scholarship. He also played baseball in college and sports would remain a passion of his throughout his life. Fred later returned to Pontiac, where he taught for nearly 40 years at Pontiac Central High School. He was a basketball coach and served as the athletic director for almost 20 years. Fred was inducted into the Pontiac Central Athletic Hall of Fame. He was well known in his community and inspired and respected by his students throughout his career. Fred was a faithful MSU football fan and he and his wife kept their season tickets for 60 years. After retirement he worked at Zittel's Final Score – a family-owned sports memorabilia store. He was a longtime member of the Pontiac-Waterford Elks, loved traveling, playing cards, and visiting the casinos. Fred is survived by his children: John (Linda), Jim (Christine), and Mike (Tiffany); grandchildren: Ryan, Arika (Justin), Alicia, Clay, and Reid; many nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Sally Zittel, on April 12, 2023, and his brother, David (the late Beverly) Zittel. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 5, 2023 from 3-7pm at COATS FUNERAL HOME – WATERFORD. Interment will take place at White Chapel Cemetery on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at 10:30am.
