Obituary

MOTZNY, ELAINE MARIE, 91, of Waterford, Michigan, passed away on July 19, 2021. She was born in Chicago in the last month of the last year of the Roaring 20's to Joseph S. and Julia M. Langer, making her a member of the "The Greatest Generation." Her childhood was spent taking dancing and piano lessons, and reading Nancy Drew novels. She worked at Bringles Bakery in Edison Park while in high school where she probably first realized the connection between offering food and making others happy. After graduating from Taft High School in Chicago, Elaine went to business school and worked for the Nurses Anesthetist's Association. She then married her high school sweetheart, William D. Motzny, whom she met while hitchhiking with her girlfriends on Halloween. (Remember-she was born in the Roaring Twenties!) After marriage, Elaine dedicated her life to the important task of running a household and raising her five children. She especially enjoyed preparing meals for her family, again making the connection between food and caring, gifting them with meals created from the latest recipes found in her magazines. (In fact, it was through these recipes that her children first learned about China-since they had to clean their plates because of the children starving there.) Her interest in the culinary arts continued after her children were all in school when she went to work for the Waterford School District as a food service employee. Elaine also made time to contribute to the community by serving as a Girl Scout leader, and being an active member in the Newcomer's and Mary Lyon's groups. In addition to cooking, some of the things that Elaine enjoyed the most include: sewing; gardening; attending her children's sporting events, recitals, and graduations; family gatherings; traveling; and scratching lottery tickets. Elaine is survived by her husband of 70 years, William D. Motzny; her five children: Linda (Mike) Prewitt, David (Karen) Motzny, Stephen (Kim) Motzny, Allan (Kelley) Motzny, and Robert (Theresa) Motzny; her 15 grandchildren; and her nine great-grandchildren. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Joseph Langer; and her grandson, Matthew Motzny. She was loved and will be missed by all who knew her.
