Obituary

Elaine Chamberlain, 101, of Waterford, Michigan, passed away on January 12, 2025. She was born on August 13, 1923, in Romeo, Michigan to the late John and Gertrude (Laser) Hartway. A straightforward and sharp-witted woman, Elaine was known for her no-nonsense attitude and her remarkable ability to speak her mind—qualities she carried with her well into her later years. She remained independent, living on her own up until her passing at the age of 101.

Elaine was a devoted mother, raising 10 children with her beloved husband, Manley, whom she was married to for over 60 years until his death in 2003. Together, they built a life full of love, laughter, and strong family bonds. Elaine cherished her role as a mother and took great pride in her large family.

An avid traveler, Elaine loved going on cruises with her friends and daughters, always seeking new experiences and adventures. In addition to her love of travel, Elaine had a passion for playing cards. A skilled euchre and pinochle player, she was an active member of the "Golden Ages Club," where she and her friends would meet regularly to play and enjoy each other's company. When not traveling or playing cards, Elaine found solace in books. A devoted reader, she had a particular fondness for Amish literature and was known to read up to three books a week.

Elaine's legacy lives on through her children: Stella Sanchez, Bill Chamberlain, Sherry Schaffer, Richard Chamberlain, Ron Chamberlain, Keith Chamberlain, Janice Chamberlain, Judith Dornton, and Lynnette Hoff; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Manley Chamberlain; her son, Allen Chamberlain; her parents, John and Gertrude Hartway; and her siblings, Louise, Vida, and Vern.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Coats Funeral Home, 3141 Sashabaw Rd., Waterford, MI 48329, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with a funeral service to follow at 1:00 PM.
