of Waterford, passed away Sunday, December 13, 2015 at 85 years of age. He was born November 8, 1930 in Detroit. Charles is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jeanette Cooney (nee Auger), and his six children, Dave (Karen) Cooney, Patt (Pat) Kelsey, Tim (Beverly) Cooney, Sue (Larry) Coppersmith, Dennis (Debbie) Cooney and Mary Cooney. Also survived by 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Martin and Wanneda Cooney and his sister Arlene Moyer. He married his high school sweetheart, Jeanette Mary Auger, on Feb. 18, 1950, at Holy Redeemer Church, in Detroit. They moved to Lincoln Park where they bought their first home as newlyweds. He lived with his wife and children in Lincoln Park for 16 years, then Commerce Township for 28 years. After living on the road for 3 years, they settled in Traverse City, MI in 1997. They spent 17 years enjoying their home beautiful northern Michigan, before they last move to Canterbury-on-the-Lake in Waterford one year ago. Charles grew up moving through the ranks of Boy Scouting, becoming an Eagle Scout, and a Counselor for 10 years. He then went on to become a Scout Leader for many years. His other interests and activities were in the world of camping and travel, with the NCHA...National Campers and Hikers Association, where he became President of their chapter, the Trailwinders. This led to many wonderful memories of camping with his family, and making countless lifelong friends. Charles was also a longtime member of the BASS Association, where he was able to pursue his love of fishing for many years...receiving a lifetime achievement award, and spending many years as Treasurer. Charles was an avid reader, sometimes reading a book a day. Also a lifelong traveler, visiting every state in the USA, except Hawaii, multiple times as well as every Canadian Province...first by tent, then pop-up camper, and eventually motorhome. He also found great enjoyment and many 'treasures', in attending auctions as often as he could. Charles worked for General Motors Cadillac Plant for 36 years, retiring in 1988.p
