Barbara Harrison passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, April 5th, 2020, at the age of 80. She is survived by two children, Mark Harrison (Patty Harrison) and Sue Case (James Case); four grandchildren: Pamela Jensen (Thomas Jensen), Lyndsay Wylie Wyborski, P.J. Harrison, and Kate Harrison; and two great-grandchildren: Sophia and Maizi Wyborski. She is also survived by her nephews and nieces: Aaron Bell, Krista Bell, Chris Garlick, Skip Garlick, Peggy Jablonski, and her sister-in-law Sue Zajic. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Gordon Garlick and Ted Garlick. Barb wore many hats throughout her life. She built a dental practice with her husband, was a stay at home mom, and worked at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, for 20 years in personnel and as an office manager for Nuclear Medicine. More recently, Barb was a beloved crossing guard, first at Haviland Elementary School, and then at Knudsen Elementary School. Even the worst ice or snow storms wouldn't keep her from "her" kids, and she spent much of her paycheck buying them goodies for every holiday. Barb lived to bring sunshine to those around her. She was mischievous. She was silly. She instigated whipped cream fights with her children and their friends (both outside and inside the house). A favorite antic was to wander her kids' school or the hospital in costume as a gorilla, hunchback of Notre Dame, or the Easter Bunny, creating an aura of mystery by ensuring no one knew her identity (including her kids). Barb was as strong as she was kind. She was a stage IV breast cancer survivor, and used this experience to support new breast cancer patients. She also taught classes in the hospital on aging. She was a regular volunteer for charity events, gave what she could to support families in need, and helped local shelters. Local firefighters and police officers were thanked for their service with her famous apple pies and applesauce.Animals held a special place in Barb's warm heart. She never met an animal that did not need to be (over)fed. The local deer, raccoons, and birds all swelled under her care. Her beloved cat was not fed so much as served a daily buffet. To those who knew her, any memory of her back porch brings an image of a flabby "hungry" squirrel holding a piece of bread or a homemade pancake. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, there will not be a funeral service or visitation. A Celebration of Life will be held at a date and location to be determined when social distancing is no longer needed.
