Index: Can I have a visitation and funeral service with cremation? Is Cremation less expensive than burial? What cost are incurred with cremation that would not be for burial? What can be done with cremated remains? Other options for cremated remains Traditional Services Most of us are familiar with one or two day visitations with our loved one present. A time to begin to recognize and reflect the change their death will have on our lives. Family and friends gather to support and reflect on what has been lost. This is a time we encourage families to do photo collages, bring in photo albums, framed pictures and other memorabilia to make this time uniquely yours. The funeral service day we will work with you regarding pallbearers, special music and procession to the cemetery or crematory. Families who are opting for cremation are beginning to have traditional services prior to cremation. Coats Funeral Home provides a beautiful oak rental casket for this purpose. Families will use pallbearers and in some cases will process to the crematory for brief committal service. There are many choices for cremation. At Coats Funeral Home we provide a variety of cremations packages for those families choosing cremation. - Simple Cremation is what most families wanting cremation are familiar with. Coats transports the loved one from place of death to the funeral home; provide shelter while all authorizations and permits are secured; minimum container required for cremation, transportation to the crematory; and time for identification of the deceased. - Simple Cremation with Private Viewing allows the family time with their loved one prior to cremation. This includes the Simple Cremation plus the body is embalmed, dressed, cosmetics and placed in a special Shaker pine cremation casket for a 30 minute private viewing. No services are held at the funeral home but a cremation urn is provided following the cremation. - Simple Cremation with Memorial Ceremony includes everything in Simple Cremation plus the cremation casket, use of the chapel for memorial visitation one hour prior to a memorial service, register book, memorial folders, thank you cards and a choice of six urns. Note that the body is not embalmed or available for viewing. - Simple Cremation with Memorial Visitation and Ceremony allows for a day of memorial visitation (no viewing of the body) and a memorial service the following day. All items listed in Simple Cremation are included along with register book, memorial folders, thank you cards and a choice of six urns. Can I have visitation and a funeral with cremation? Yes, any type of service or viewing time is possible. Coats Funeral Home offers a rental casket and cremation caskets for this type of service. Is Cremation less expensive than burial? Cremation can be less expensive than burial because it is not necessary to purchase a burial vault or outer grave liner, cemetery property, pay grave opening and closing, or grave maintenance fees. It is also possible to rent a casket rather than purchasing one for viewing and the funeral service. The casket interior is replaced with each rental. What cost are incurred that would not be incurred for burial? First, there is the cost of the cremation itself. The cremation takes place at the crematory. Crematories are normally located at a cemetery. This charge ranges from $175 to $250. There is also a cremation approval fee of $20 to the Oakland County Medical Examiner for deaths occurring in Oakland County to $75 for deaths occurring in Wayne County. This fee will vary from county to county. What can be done with cremated remains after cremation? The family is free to do what they wish with the ashes. We do not recommend scattering in lakes, or burial on property which may be sold in the future or without permission from the property owner due to potential legal liabilities. Other options for cremated remains include, but not limited to: - Purchasing an urn. - Burying in a cremation space at a cemetery. - Burying in a standard adult grave where another burial has or will take place. - Cremated remains can be mailed or shipped to other parts of the country or world. When considering cremation it can be extremely important to prearrange. An individual can NOT sign their own cremation authorization. Therefore it is important to discuss your wishes with your loved ones and prearrange your funeral with necessary cremation forms.
